Ego Reassertion

The snake at Cell Sixty-Three is the board's most instructive, and perhaps most compassionate. Ego Reassertion at this high level of the journey sends the piece all the way back to Cell Two — Illusion. This is a precise diagnosis: the ego's final and most subtle strategy, when it cannot prevent spiritual progress through obvious tactics like fear or attachment, is to co-opt the progress itself. "I have become enlightened." "I am now more advanced than others." "My spiritual understanding is superior." These are thoughts. They are the old identification in a new costume. And they are, in the Lila's language, a form of illusion.

This is one of the most well-documented hazards on the contemplative path: the spiritual ego, which is in many ways more stubborn than its ordinary counterpart because it believes itself to be the solution rather than the problem. The Zen tradition calls this "stink of enlightenment." The sages are unanimous: the approach of genuine liberation is always marked by a deepening humility, never by the feeling of having arrived.

If you find yourself here, the teaching is tender: you have not failed. You have simply seen a subtler layer of the same construction. The seeing is the liberation, not the falling. Return to the basics. Return to the beginner's mind. Return to Cell Two with the eyes of the sixty-second cell.

True progress leaves no trace of one who has progressed.
