Pride
🐍 Snake: karma pulls you back to cell 8 — Jealousy
Pride
The fall comes after pride swells the heart. Humility is not weakness — it is the soil in which wisdom grows.
The Steep Descent
The snake at Cell Twelve is one of the most instructive in the game. Pride — in the sense of inflated self-importance rather than healthy self-respect — sends the piece sliding all the way back to Cell Eight, the square of Jealousy. The teaching encoded in this movement is precise: pride and jealousy are two faces of the same wound, the wound of comparative worth. The proud person elevates themselves above others to avoid feeling the inadequacy they fear; the jealous person looks upward at others to confirm it. Both are trapped in the same game of relative value, and the Lila calls it by name.
This is not a condemnation of confidence or achievement. Healthy pride — the quiet satisfaction of having done something well — is not what this cell names. This is the pride that needs an audience, that requires acknowledgment to survive, that secretly depends on others being less in order to feel like more.
Landing here or watching the piece fall from here is an invitation to ask: where am I currently positioning myself above others, and what fear is that position protecting? The humility that lies on the other side of this question is not smallness — it is spaciousness. When you stop needing to be above, you become free to simply be.
The practice: find one person you have been subtly dismissing and make a genuine effort to learn something from them today.
I am free from the need for superiority, and in that freedom I find real dignity.
