🐍 Snake: karma pulls you back to cell 9 — Ego
Attachment
Holding too tightly to outcomes creates suffering. What you grasp at slips through your fingers like water.
The Descent into Self
The snake at Cell Forty-Four is among the board's most revealing: Attachment sends the piece sliding back to Cell Nine — the Ego. This descent maps with precise accuracy the anatomy of clinging. At the root of every deep attachment is the ego's need: to secure a particular identity, to guarantee a specific future, to lock in the conditions that the small self believes will make it safe. When we cling to a person, a role, an outcome, or even an idea, we are ultimately clinging to the story of who we believe we are.
The Lila does not teach non-attachment as emotional coldness. It teaches non-attachment as the freedom to love without possessing, to work without grasping, to engage fully while remaining unentangled. This is an advanced art, and the fact that the snake from this cell sends you back to the beginning of the ego work says something important: the deeper the attachment, the deeper the self-inquiry it requires.
What are you currently holding too tightly? A relationship, a dream, an opinion, a self-image? The clue is the anxiety that arises when you imagine losing it. Gentle investigation of that anxiety always leads, layer by layer, to a deeper fear — and that deeper fear is where the real freedom is to be found.
The practice: identify your current most painful attachment. Ask: who would I be without this? The answer is always: freer.
I hold what I love with open hands, and in that openness everything is more fully alive.
