Greed

In Buddhist cosmology, the hungry ghost is the being with an enormous hollow belly and a throat too narrow to ever swallow enough — it reaches for more, always more, and nothing satisfies. Cell Four on the Lila path names this condition with piercing clarity: Greed. And yet the teachings are not unkind. The hunger itself is not the root of the problem. Beneath the grasping lives a wound: the deep-seated belief that the universe is not generous, that there is not enough, and therefore that you must seize before the supply runs out.

This cell sits early in the journey because scarcity-thinking is one of the primary veils that keeps souls playing a smaller game than they were made for. When you believe there is not enough love, attention, money, or time, you begin to accumulate and hoard — not from genuine need, but from the terror of lack. The irony, which Lila makes visible with characteristic directness, is that this very grasping constricts the channels through which abundance would naturally flow.

Stopping here is an invitation to name what, underneath your surface hungers, you are truly afraid of losing. Security? Love? Significance? When that real fear is seen, it can be addressed at its actual source — which is always internal, not a matter of acquiring more.

The practical medicine for Cell Four is an act of deliberate generosity: give something away that you have been holding tightly. Not a sacrifice — an experiment in trust. Notice whether the sky falls.
