True Reality

Cell Sixty-Nine — True Reality — is the destination of the Grace ladder from Cell Seventeen. By arriving here, the soul has received one of the board's most extraordinary gifts: the direct seeing of what lies behind the constructed reality, the perception that the Tao Te Ching calls the "uncarved block" and the Vedanta calls Brahman — the vast, luminous, loving ground from which all appearances arise and to which all appearances return.

This is not an intellectual understanding. The contemplatives are unanimous on this: Tat Tvam Asi ("That thou art") — the recognition that the seer and the seen are not two — cannot be understood by the ordinary mind. It can only be lived, from the inside, in the direct experience of what is.

What the person who touches True Reality consistently reports is not what they expected. They expected emptiness or abstraction. They find a fullness more real than anything previously encountered: a love that is not emotional but structural, a peace that is not passive but luminous, a knowing that has no subject because the knower and the known have merged.

The Lila's teaching for this cell: do not explain what you have seen. Simply let it rearrange how you live.
