The Three-Card Tarot Spread

The most versatile tarot spread — how to use past-present-future and other three-card layouts for any question.

The three-card spread is the cornerstone of tarot reading — simple enough for beginners yet rich enough for experienced readers. Its power lies in the narrative tension between three distinct but related positions.

The most common interpretation is Past–Present–Future. Card 1 (left) represents the forces that led to the current situation. Card 2 (center) reflects what is happening right now — the energy surrounding the querent. Card 3 (right) shows the likely outcome if current energies continue.

Other popular interpretations of the three positions include:

  • Situation–Action–Outcome: What is the situation, what should I do, what result can I expect?
  • Mind–Body–Spirit: Three layers of the self in relation to a question
  • Option A–Option B–What to consider: For decision-making
  • Strengths–Challenges–Advice: For personal growth readings

When reading a three-card spread, look for elemental relationships between cards. Three cards from the same suit signal intensity in that domain of life. Opposing elements (Fire/Water or Air/Earth) may indicate internal conflict. A progression from Major to Minor Arcana (or vice versa) often indicates a shift from destined forces to personal agency.

Reversed cards in a three-card spread carry particular weight. A reversed card in the Outcome position may indicate blocked energy or a need to reconsider direction — not necessarily a bad outcome, but a more internal one.
