The Major Arcana are the 22 trump cards that form the spiritual backbone of the tarot deck. Unlike the Minor Arcana, which deal with everyday events, the Major Arcana describe the larger forces at work in a life — the soul’s journey from innocence (The Fool, 0) to wholeness (The World, XXI).
This path is often called The Fool’s Journey, a hero’s quest through 21 archetypal stages. Each card represents a universal human experience: The Magician (I) — the awakening of willpower; The High Priestess (II) — intuition and the hidden; The Empress (III) — fertility, abundance, and nature; The Emperor (IV) — authority and structure.
Cards V through VII (The Hierophant, The Lovers, The Chariot) deal with society, relationships, and determination. Cards VIII through XIV (Strength, The Hermit, Wheel of Fortune, Justice, The Hanged Man, Death, Temperance) mark the inner journey — facing trials, surrendering, and finding balance.
The final seven (The Devil through The World) represent the most intense confrontations: shadow, catastrophe, hope, judgment, and ultimate integration.
When a Major Arcana card appears in a reading, it signals that something larger than day-to-day concerns is at play. Multiple Major Arcana in a reading suggest a pivotal moment in the querent’s life — a time when fate, karma, and higher purpose are actively at work.
