Crystals absorb and hold energy from their environment, including the intentions, emotions, and vibrations they encounter. Regular cleansing clears accumulated energies so the crystal can work at its highest potential. Charging then replenishes and amplifies its natural properties.
The seven most effective cleansing methods:

Moonlight (universally safe). Place crystals outside or on a windowsill during a full moon. Leave overnight. Works for virtually all stones, including water-sensitive ones like selenite or malachite.

Sunlight (use with caution). A few hours of morning sunlight charges many crystals powerfully, but it fades color in amethyst, rose quartz, celestite, and aquamarine. Best for clear quartz, tiger’s eye, and citrine.

Running water (not for all stones). Hold the crystal under cool running water for 1–3 minutes, visualizing energy draining away. Avoid with stones rated below 5 on the Mohs scale (selenite, kyanite, malachite) as they may dissolve or crack.

Selenite (passive, ongoing). Place crystals on a selenite charging plate or next to a selenite wand. Selenite never needs cleansing itself and continuously clears neighboring stones.

Sound (safe for all). Use a singing bowl, tuning fork, or bell. The vibrations break up stagnant energy. Place the crystal inside or near the bowl and play for 5–10 minutes.

Smoke (smudging). Pass crystals through smoke from sage, palo santo, or cedar. The smoke carries away old energy. Ideal for stones with many facets where other methods may be impractical.

Intention and breath. Hold the crystal, take three deep breaths, and on each exhale, intend for old energies to be released. Simple but effective when done with genuine focus.
After cleansing, charge by stating your intention clearly: “This amethyst supports my meditation and intuitive clarity.” Crystals respond to specific direction.
