The Timeline spread is the most literal of the temporal tarot layouts - five cards placed in a line from left to right, each corresponding to a distinct period of time. It is less about a specific situation and more about the thread of continuity running through your life. Where you have been shapes where you are. Where you are carries implications for where you are heading. The Timeline makes those connections visible.
The Five Positions
Distant past - the foundation. Events, conditions, or formative experiences from further back that are still relevant to what is happening now. This is not every event from your past - it is specifically what has left an active trace in the present situation. The Moon here suggests formative confusion or deception that still casts a shadow. The Star suggests a period of hope or healing that built a resource you are still drawing on.
Recent past - what was happening in the period leading directly into now. The most directly causal position in the spread. A conflict, a breakthrough, a transition, an ending - whatever the recent past card surfaces, it directly explains something about the present.
Present - the current moment. Not where things are heading, not where they were - exactly where you are standing right now, energetically and circumstantially. The Hermit here says the present moment is one of necessary solitude and inward work. The Chariot says current energy is focused, driven, and moving.
Near future - what is approaching. The next phase, what is coming into form, what is moving toward you in the near term. This is not the final destination - it is the next chapter.
Long-term outlook - the furthest point the Timeline reads. Given everything in the previous four positions, where the overall arc is leading. This card is read as a trajectory, not a fixed point. The energy in the present can shift the long-term outlook.
How to Read the Pattern
The power of the Timeline is in the pattern across all five positions, not in any single card. Look for dominant suits or themes that run through multiple positions. If Swords appear in three of the five, conflict or thought-work or communication has been and continues to be the primary medium of your experience. If the suit shifts dramatically from Cups in the past to Pentacles in the future, that tells a story about where energy is redirecting.
Reversals in the Timeline shift the quality of a period without canceling it. A reversed card in the distant past position often signals something that was not fully integrated or understood at the time.
Reflect on the thread running through your story, and let the five positions show you where it leads.
