Allan Kardec's Spiritism: The Five Principles

The foundational doctrine of modern Spiritism — Kardec's five core principles and how they differ from spiritualism.

Allan Kardec (born Hippolyte Léon Denizard Rivail, 1804–1869) was a French educator and researcher who codified the doctrine of Spiritism in “The Spirits’ Book” (1857). Unlike Spiritualism (primarily Anglo-American, focused on communication with the dead), Kardec’s Spiritism is a structured philosophical and religious doctrine with moral implications.

The Five Fundamental Principles of Kardec’s Spiritism:

  1. Existence of God. A Supreme Intelligence exists that is the first cause of all things. This being is eternal, immutable, immaterial, unique, all-powerful, sovereignly just and good.

  2. Immortality of the Soul. The soul (or spirit) is an immaterial being, distinct from the physical body, which survives physical death and continues to evolve.

  3. Reincarnation. Spirits reincarnate multiple times in different physical bodies to achieve moral and intellectual progress. Reincarnation is not a punishment but an opportunity for evolution.

  4. Spirit Communication. Spirits of the deceased can and do communicate with the living, primarily through mediums. These communications serve to provide guidance, evidence of survival, and moral instruction.

  5. Moral Progress as the Purpose. The goal of human existence is moral improvement. Each incarnation offers opportunities to correct past errors and develop virtues such as charity, humility, and love.

Kardecism is particularly strong in Brazil, where it has deeply influenced culture, medicine (via spiritual healing centers), and social welfare. Brazilian Spiritism integrates Kardec’s doctrine with African-derived religious elements in some traditions, creating unique hybrid forms.

Spiritism differs from mere mediumship practice in its ethical emphasis: mediums should never charge money for consultations, readings are meant to offer moral guidance rather than fortune-telling, and all spirit communication should be filtered through discernment for its moral value.
