Planetary Influence on Human Illness

A classical system of medical astrology linking each planet to specific diseases and bodily weaknesses. Drawn from Renaissance astrological medicine and preserved in the Izida journal via the work of Julevno.

'Each planet in affliction draws the body toward its own diseases, as iron filings follow the magnet.' - Julevno

Izida occult journal, Russia, c. 1909-1914

Medical astrology held for centuries that the planets do not merely shape character - they shape the body's vulnerabilities. Each planet was understood to govern certain organs, fluids, and temperamental tendencies, and when that planet fell under stress in the natal chart or by transit, the corresponding weaknesses could surface. This system, as recorded by Julevno and translated by E.N. Kondratkovskaya in the Izida journal, gives a planet-by-planet map of illness.

Saturn and the Slow Diseases

Saturn governs the slow and the hard: ear and dental problems, lingering fevers, tuberculosis, trembling, rheumatism, jaundice, dropsy, and apoplexy. A Saturn in close square with Mars in a birth chart was seen as a signal for epilepsy. The planet's cold, dry quality condenses and hardens what should flow.

Jupiter, Mars and the Heat

Jupiter rules the lungs and blood. Pleurisy, pulmonary seizures, spinal ailments, and blood disorders in fever states fall under its domain - particularly when Jupiter's expansive energy turns excess. Mars, by contrast, produces heat and violence: jaundice, typhus, migraines, boils, scarlet fever, contagious illness, burns, bladder and kidney stones, and wounds. A Mars debilitated at birth was read as a risk for intellectual abnormality.

Sun, Venus and Mercury

The Sun illuminates and inflames: ulcers, brain and heart diseases, weakness of the eyes, convulsions. Venus touches the generative and the fluid: reproductive disorders, kidney and uterine disease, venereal illness, hernias, diabetes. Mercury governs the nervous system in its entirety - memory loss, stuttering, hallucinations, all forms of nervous seizure, gout of the hands and feet.

The Moon and the Outer Planets

The Moon's list is the longest, touching the most diffuse conditions: apoplexy, bladder disease, dropsy, rheumatism, menstrual irregularities, joint gout, digestive troubles, eye disease, convulsions, anemia, smallpox, and madness in its many forms. The outer planets add their notes: Uranus produces sudden illness from rapid temperature change - its action was read as a combination of Mercury, Venus, and Saturn. Neptune disturbs from within: inner discord, nervous irritation, and brain disease without clear outer cause.

Using the System Today

This framework was used not to replace medicine but alongside it - to time treatment, identify root causes, and understand why the same illness moved differently through different people. In the 21st century it survives as a lens for reflection, not a diagnostic substitute.
