Pegomancy derives from the Greek "pege" (spring) and centers on sacred natural water sources as conduits for divine messages. Diviners visited wells and springs at dawn, dropped offerings β flowers, coins, bread β into the water, and read the resulting bubbles and ripples. Still water that suddenly stirred meant a spirit was present and receptive; turbid water warned against proceeding. Across ancient Greece, sacred springs were tended by oracular priestesses who practiced pegomancy as part of their ritual duties.
