Ornithomancy derives from Greek ornis (bird) and manteia (prophecy). Augurs observed the direction of flight, species, and calls of birds to forecast outcomes of battles, harvests, and political events. The right side signified good fortune; the left, caution. Eagles, ravens, and owls carried the strongest omens. Roman augury was a formal state institution — no legion marched without a favorable reading.
