Mirror & reflection

Enoptromancy

A variant of mirror scrying combining a polished reflective surface with water to produce dual-layer visions. Related to both catoptromancy and hydromancy.

In the quivering union of mirror and water, the boundary between the seen and the unseen dissolves.

Journal Isida, 1909, "Practical Divination"

Enoptromancy uses a mirror partially submerged in or placed beneath water, creating a shimmering, unstable reflection that the seer interprets. The movement of water distorts the image further, generating the ambiguous patterns from which visions are read. Some accounts describe suspending a mirror above a bowl of water at moonlight to capture lunar reflections. The combined instability of mirror and water surface was considered to thin the veil between worlds, making contact with hidden truths easier.
