Dendromancy

Sacred tree divination using oak, mistletoe, and other revered trees. Central to Druidic practice in ancient Celtic Britain and Gaul.

β€œWhere the oak speaks and the mistletoe gleams, the gods reveal their will to those who listen.”

Journal Isida, 1909, "Practical Divination"

Dendromancy (from Greek dendron, tree) was most elaborate among the Druids, who regarded the oak as a cosmic axis. Mistletoe cut from oak with a golden sickle at the winter solstice was considered supremely potent. Diviners read the rustling of leaves, the direction of branch growth, and patterns in bark to answer questions about harvest, war, and fate. The sacred grove β€” nemeton β€” served as the temple.
