Cleromancy

Divination by casting lots β€” dice, bones, sticks, or marked objects β€” and reading the pattern of their fall. Among the most widespread oracular practices in human history.

β€œThe lot does not fall by chance alone; in its landing, necessity and destiny converge.”

Journal Isida, 1909, "Practical Divination"

Cleromancy (from Greek kleros, lot) encompasses any divination that introduces chance as the medium of divine will. The ancient Hebrews used Urim and Thummim; Romans cast sortes; Norse cultures threw rune staves; many Indigenous traditions cast marked bones. Astragalomancy β€” casting animal knucklebones β€” is an ancient precursor to dice. The underlying logic holds that no truly random fall exists: every outcome reflects a hidden order. Modern dice oracles and I Ching coin tosses continue this tradition.
