Botanomancy

Divination by burning plants, leaves, or branches and reading the smoke, ash, and flame patterns. Practiced across ancient Mediterranean and Celtic cultures.

In the smoke of sacred herbs the wise woman sees what the unlearned eye cannot perceive.

Botanomancy uses sacred plants — vervain, fig branches, and laurel were common choices. The diviner would inscribe questions on leaves and cast them into fire, then read the patterns of smoke and how quickly the plant burned. Slow combustion meant obstacles; bright clean flame, a favorable omen. Ash shapes left after the fire provided additional symbols for interpretation.
