Abacomancy

Divination by reading shapes and marks in dust, dirt, or ashes left on a surface after ritual.

"Write your question in ash and leave it to the night — the morning will answer."

Journal Isida, 1909, "Practical Divination"

Abacomancy reads meaning in the arrangement of dust or ash — on windowsills, on altar surfaces, or deliberately spread on flat boards. One German tradition involved writing a question with the index finger into ritual ash spread outdoors, leaving it overnight in damp air, and reading the surviving letters at dawn. Partial letters predicted partial outcomes; erased letters warned of futility. Abacomancy bridges geomancy and pyromancy, as the ash often came from sacred fires. The practice valued whatever forms appeared without human intention.
